This class requires a visit to courtroom 306 in Philadelphia’s Criminal Justice Center (1301 Filbert St.) on either a Tuesday or Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. when the court hear preliminary hearings on homicide cases. Those are the only days it hear murder cases. This link will take you to a schedule of hearings for each day, several days in advance. You should do a little preliminary investigation of each case (Google the defendant’ name) so you know a few details going in. Not all of the cases will have made the news (for reasons we have discussed in class) but usually a couple will.
While observe carefully what is happening, both in the courtroom and in the gallery area. I will ask you to write a 500-word reflection on what you observe, so it might be worth it to take some notes.
